Pongal 2025: A Celebration of Tradition And Joy!

On January 31, 2025, Chettinad Vidya Mandir celebrated Pongal with great zeal, showcasing cultural traditions through traditional performances, rituals, and enthusiastic involvement by all!

A procession featuring folk arts, dances, and Nadaswaram set the festive tone. Starting from the Vidya Ganapathi temple, learnerss and teachers showcased Silambam, Kalaripayattu, Oyilattam, and Kummi while carrying molappari and thamboolam. The celebration culminated at the venue where the Principal and Vice Principal lit the stoves for the traditional Pongal boiling.

The celebration began with children chanting Surya Gayatri and Adithya Hridhayam, followed by dances and a Pongal-themed skit. Learners performed Surya Namaskar, understanding the festival’s significance in honoring the Sun God. As the milk bubbled over, their joyous chant of “Pongalo Pongal” echoed across the campus!

As a pre-activity, Grade 1 and 2 students collected firewood for Pongal preparation, while Grade 3 created family trees and honoured their ancestors. Grade 4 explored Uttarayanam and Dakshinayanam, and Grade 5 performed the Kaka Pidi Kanu Pidi ritual, also crafting a village Pongal diorama. On the celebration day, Grade 6 decorated the venue with mango leaf thoran, and Grade 7, after learning about 11 varieties of Pongal, prepared the dish.

Grade 8 decorated the floors with Kolams, Grade 9 organised games for younger students, and Grade 11 organised the procession. A Gho Pooja honoured cattle, highlighting Pongal’s four-day significance. Parents too actively joined the festivities, and the celebration concluded with everyone savouring the delicious Sweet Pongal!
